How to Keep Flowers Fresh in a Heatwave
Beautiful, warm weather is a delight in summer, but it can cause unfavorable conditions for our fresh flowers.
Read on for top tips on how to keep flowers fresh this season from Flowers Forever, The Designer Florist.
Simple starting points
These base-level rules for arranging your bouquet will help you to keep flowers fresh in the heat, as they do throughout the rest of the year:
- Fill a clean vase with fresh water and add flower food.
- Trim 2cm off each stem.
- Remove any leaves that fall below the waterline
Hydration & support
Flowers and foliage use water to prop-up their stems, so if they’re looking sad they most likely just need a quick drink (and the support of stronger stems around them). Be wary that in warm weather you’ll need to take extra care to ensure the water is topped up vigilantly, as it will evaporate more quickly!
Keep a spray bottle with fresh water near your blooms and give them the occasional spritz; this will help to maintain their hydration and keep them looking their best for longer.
Remember to change the water.
The warm weather can encourage the spread of certain bacteria. Ensure that as time goes by, you repeat the care steps from the top of this article and change the water every few days to keep your lovely flowers blooming.
Keep out of direct sunlight Do your best to keep flowers out of direct sunlight. Even though flowers need light to help them bloom, too much will make them open up too quickly, shortening the lifetime of your bouquet.
Top tip: Hot weather or not, some flowers will fade sooner than others as time goes on. Remove these from your display and pop your remaining blooms into smaller jars to make posies!
Hope this helps!!
